Choose one of the children to start, the first card is then turned over and the sentence on the cards is read quickly. The card should then be shown to the rest of the group for them to check. This process is repeated for as many cards as time allows. The other children then take turns to turn over cards and read the sentences as quickly as they can. To add more excitement a timer can be used and the children can play again to try and beat the group’s first time. 2. If children are struggling then ask them to show the card to the rest of the group. Identify whether the difficulty is caused by a decodable word or a camera word (these are in bold). If it is decodable then support the child to sound out each phoneme, then blend them together to read the whole word. They should then attempt the sentence again. For camera words, ask the rest of the group to help out. If no one knows, then read the sentence and ask what word would make sense. If they still cannot read it, tell them what the word is, and make a note so it can be reinforced at the end of the session. Fast Write: 1. The adult turns over a card from the pile. The adult reads the sentence to the group and lets them see the card for a few seconds. The card should then be hidden and the children write the sentence in their books or on their whiteboards. Keep repeating the sentence as the children write. You might want to point out helpful hints e.g. “well we know ‘house’ is one of our camera words”, or “Ooh ‘carry’, well the rr phoneme is in the middle so we know that’s a double r” . 2. When all the children have finished writing show the card again and ask the children to check their writing and correct any errors.
