How to Surpass the Reading and Writing Achievement Standards in the National Curriculum
The National Curriculum is out, and it is evident that phonics is going to be the core of your language program for the early years. Get Reading Right’s synthetic phonics program will get your school to the National Curriculum standards and beyond - just like it did for Ironbark Ridge Public School!
| Kindy/Prep National Curriculum Standards: |
|
Reading:
Children will “name sound–letter matches for most consonants and short vowels, recognise high frequency sight words and work out short regular words using context, grammatical and phonic knowledge”.
|
Spelling:
Children will “accurately spell a growing number of irregular words and demonstrate an increasing ability to spell common and unknown words using sound–letter knowledge”
|
| Part One of the Get Reading Right program, for kindy/prep, gets you to the standard by teaching: |
|
- all the consonants and short vowels sound-letter matches (the first 30 sounds of the 44 sounds required in phonics teaching)
- the first 36 essential irregular, high frequency sight words
- reading short regular words using phonics knowledge – in the context of real books: lots of practice of single words in the Practice Books and then to read sentences in a decodable story
|
- the spelling for the first 36 essential irregular, high frequency sight words
- to use their phonic knowledge to attempt to spell unknown words
|
| Check out what children achieve with our program at the end of kindy/prep: |
- Confidence in writing and spelling flourishes - see this writing sample to see the improvements to spelling after only 40 weeks!
- Reading longer words - check out a page from book 6 which children are reading at the end of kindy/prep
