Get Reading Right - the tools to read and spell

Boost Literacy outcomes as a National Partnership School with Get Reading Right

Get Reading Right specialises in evidenced-based literacy resources, training, mentoring and coaching to help schools receiving funding to achieve the National Partnership reforms in literacy.

Our principal trainer, Jo-Anne Dooner, has worked with many schools in NSW to help improve their NAPLAN results: Blaxcell Street Public School, Fairfield West Public School, Old Guildford Public School to name a few. How did we help them achieve their goals?

National Partnership - Goal 1:

Evidence-based interventions which achieve accelerated and sustained improvements in literacy outcomes for students, particularly those falling behind.

Get Reading Right – Solution

Our literacy programme is based on rigorous research and the recommendations outlined in the National Inquiry into Literacy. Our phonics programme meets or exceeds every one of the recommendations in this report. The training that we provide is also pedagogically sound. The research of John Hattie, Robert Marzano and others underpins our classroom practice.

Our programme, coupled with training, will provide teachers with

  • the knowledge, skills and strategies to teach the key literacy concepts – we give them an explicit framework for their teaching of speaking and listening, reading and writing.
  • school based resources that deliver consistent, high quality literacy teaching.
  • targeted strategies and resources to address the specific needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
  • additional specialised classroom demonstrations and support to assist school leaders and teachers to improve student outcomes.

Praise from Teachers

“I am more amazed every day at the progress the children are making. I just administered the South Australian spelling test and found that most of my prep children were spelling between 6 months and two years ahead of the expected level for their age.”
Jaiki Pop-Sitters from Balacava Public School in Queensland.

National Partnership - Goal 2:

Implement literacy reforms that develop strong school leadership and whole school engagement with literacy.

Get Reading Right – Solution

Through resources and training we support the leadership team to create a strong vision for literacy. In our experience when teachers feel this sense of direction, the whole school becomes engaged with the literacy goals. Get Reading Right also provides guidance on preparing documentation such as scope and sequences, essential agreements and policies, assessment and tracking of attainment and achievement over time.

Our training will

  • Support school leaders to develop a whole school culture of high performance in literacy.
  • Provide strategies to encourage parental engagement in literacy education.
  • Build the capacity of principals and other members of school leadership teams to drive continuous improvement, through identification and implementation of proven literacy practices and the use of performance data.
  • Provide ongoing professional learning support for principals and other members of school leadership team.

Praise and Awards

Blaxcell Street Public School was awarded the NSW Director General’s Award for Literacy.

“We received great advice from Jo-Anne. We all feel so much more confident to tackle literacy issues in our school”.
Hani Zahra, Deputy Principal, Blaxcell Street Public School, Sydney.

National Partnership - Goal 3:

Implement literacy reforms that identify where support is needed through monitoring student and school literacy performance.

Get Reading Right – Solution

Authentic assessment is at the heart of good learning and it is not as difficult as many teachers think. Our resources and training shows teachers how to use assessment to drive the planning, teaching and learning in your school:

  • Supporting schools and teachers to use literacy performance information to identify the individual learning needs of every student so that appropriate literacy teaching strategies can be used.
  • Ensuring that assessment, feedback, tracking and reporting clearly tells students, parents and teachers how each student’s literacy attainment compares to national standards.
  • Demonstrating best practice in using information to diagnose student learning needs and how to implement intervention strategies successfully.
  • Providing leadership and support to schools in tracking student progress over time, particularly for cohorts of students.
