Day 3 - Guided Reading

Guided reading is a fundamental part of a balanced literacy programme. It allows teachers to plan, teach and assess every child’s reading. Learn how to have successful guided reading up and running in every classroom.

The Citigate Central Hotel, Haymarket, Sydney, Wednesday 13th October 2010, 9.30am - 4pm

Teachers will learn:
 

• Theory of guided reading, including current research
• How to structure guided reading sessions
• How to plan independent literacy experiences for groups during guided reading
• Hands-on experience with ready made games and activities to make learning fun
• How to get started - practical workshops to begin to plan and assess

Impact on children:
 

• Increased reading standards for all children
• Explicit use of reading strategies to gain meaning from text
• Improved fluency and comprehension
• Improved attitude towards reading

As a result parents will:

• Know and understand the Guided Reading / Home Reading levels used in school 
• Feel confident that children are enjoying reading and their teachers are the reading experts that their children need

The workshop leader is Jo-Anne Dooner, co-founder of Get Reading Right and author of the best selling Synthetic Phonics Toolkit. Having worked as a Deputy-Principal and a Literacy Coordinator Jo-Anne has a deep understanding of how to lead literacy development as well as how to teach it. Her training is Jo-Anne is  “teacher friendly" and has a no "nonsense approach” which inspires teachers to get up and do it!
